470 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Cleaning Up
Location: Main sickbay

Pete wasn't having the best of mornings and it was only 0930. He'd lacerated himself pretty nicely shaving, slipped in the shower and bruised his hip, and now he'd bashed his hand on an open access panel.

He walked into sickbay which was surprisingly busy since they were effectively on a shakedown cruise. "Excuse me nurse, where can I find the boss?" Pete was nursing his right hand with his left.

"Around the corner, second door on the left. He was in there a few minutes ago." The nurse responded. "Anything I can do for you?"

"Not in here. But if you'd care for a drink some night..." Pete said with a slight grin on his face.

"I'll let you know." The nurse said tapping his hand with a PaDD which was beginning to turn an odd shade of purple. "Second door on the left."

A rapping sound came from the door frame of his office and Avram looked up to see a crewmember standing there. A quick glance told him the man held the rank of Lieutenant.
"How can I help you Lieutenant?"

"Morning Doc. Can I trouble you for a few minutes? I'm pretty sure I've got a broken hand." Pete said stepping further into the office.

"Well, how'd you go and mange that?" Avram asked, reaching for a medical tricorder.

Pete grunted as the Doc gingerly manipulated his hand. "Basically I wasn't watching what I was doing. I was opening an access cover and it slipped out of my hand. I thought I just banged iiiiitttt....." He squealed as the Doc put pressure on his ring finger.

"Yep, it is definitely broken." The Doctor answered. "Shouldn't be much trouble to fix, but I will caution you to be much more careful in the future."

He was almost panting as Avram pulled on two of his fingers. The pop as his finger snapped back into place was definitely audible. "I would have appreciate a warning on that one." As Pete's breathing evened out. "Wow." Bradford waved an auto mender over Carters hand for a few minutes and little by little the soreness went away. "Thanks Doc."

"I'm sorry that was painful, but we had to get the fracture reset. It should be feeling much better now. The break is repaired, but you still need take it easy for a day or two."

"Sure thing Doc. I'm left handed anyways." Pete said chuckling a bit, the Doctor just grinned as he made a quick note on a PaDD. "I appreciate this Doc. Thanks." Pete slowly made a fist and relaxed his hand. "I'll see you around." Pete said as he stepped through the office door.
